SWAYMERE
THE PORCH LETTER · OCTOBER
Four porches. Four right answers.
The question we get most is not about wood or finish. It is which swing will actually fit. So this month, the short version, porch by porch.

01 · THE NARROW FRONT PORCH
Under 7ft deep? The Hollis.
A 4ft seat with an upright back, so it swings forward and back without hitting the wall behind it. Painted in any of six colours.
The Hollis, from £640
02 · THE DEEP COVERED PORCH
Room to lie down? The Marlow.
A hanging daybed on four ropes. It needs 9ft of depth and a beam rated for 350kg, but it is the one people end up sleeping on in August.
The Marlow, from £1,690
03 · NO PORCH AT ALL
Just a lawn? The Fenn.
The swing brings its own frame. Two people bolt it together in an afternoon, and it moves with you when the sun does.
The Fenn, from £1,120
04 · UNDER A PERGOLA
Half open to the sky? The Wren.
A smaller daybed with an outdoor-grade mattress that dries in a morning, for spots where the rain gets in sideways.
The Wren, from £1,450

THE CLEARANCE RULE
Leave 45cm behind the swing and 90cm in front of it.
Less behind and it knocks the wall on the backswing. Less in front and knees meet the railing. Measure both before choosing a width, not after the hooks are in.

Not sure which porch you have?
Reply with a photo of the spot and its depth. One of our joiners will tell you which swing fits, usually the same day.
